An announcement by the Pope on the 6th of January took many by surprise when amongst the newly chosen to be cardinals there was a Maltese Augustinian monk. Fr Prospero Grech is a highly respected professor of theology and has lectured in universities such as the Pontifical Biblical Institute and the Lateran University. School textbooks are usually boring, full of never-ending text and unappealing to say the least. Its like whoever designs them takes extra care of making them dull and uninteresting. But that’s not the case with this book. For almost a year, we have been working on this book and I think we really turned a new page! Thanks to the great teachers that contributed in the making of the main text, Tazia Hall who has done almost all the illustrations and my design talents (how humble!) this publication makes me really proud Take a look at Unit 1 of ‘L-Avventura ta’ Ħajti’, or ‘My Adventure’ in the english version of the book, and see for yourselves that this book is unlike any other one you met. Here in the Maltese Islands, almost every church holds great treasures of art and architecture. One such case is the beautiful priory and church of Saint Mark just outside the old capitol of Mdina. With a history of almost 600 years, the community of the augustinian monks have been a steadfast example of faith and love. The actual monastery was destroyed a couple of times during the Turkish Siege but every time the monks together with the community of faithful rebuilt from the ashes an even more beautiful house for the Lord and his people. Since 2008, I began to design the covers of one the countries main journals in spirituality called ‘Rivista ta’ Spiritwalità’ published by the Society of Christian Doctrine and featuring experts in the various fields of spirituality. Here are some of the designs I did during these past years.
From time to time I get the opportunity to design a cover for a book that in some cases would already be in print. These kind of jobs are a designer’s dream since we can concentrate all our creative-mojo to one single task – giving the wings for the book to fly high. And even if in most cases deadlines are quite short, the day you get a printed copy in your hands you forget all the dire calls you got from the authors or the printers saying you are a lot later than late. Hopefully the same sentiments are shared with the mentioned authors and printers
For many years QalbinNies has been airing on the local national TV station TVM. It is a programme dealing mainly with social and religious themes and now for the first time a selected set of episodes has been remastered in order to aid in a number of education programmes. A total of 60 episodes together with various clips of expert comments has become a collection not to be missed by anyone in education. For more information go to www.movingimage.com
These last three years I happened to have the opportunity to help the Mission Fund of Malta in communicating its efforts to help the Missions. Each year the reception was great and although I stumbled upon some deadlines they were quite proud of my work… and I am proud that they are proud
These last weeks I have been working with the Pastoral Formation Institute on their new prospectus. Instead of producing a booklet with all the courses the administration has come with the idea to make a different flyer for every course so any prospective student has all the information needed in a couple of pages. Its easy to navigate and very straight-forward to apply for the course. And it really looks great! Read more…
In 2010 the Secretariat for Catechesis began to publish a new series of children’s books for the evening catechesis classes. I find that one of the most difficult tasks for a designer is not designing a colorful fancy magazine but a letterhead. The task of designing a page that needs to be blank is a feat worthy of Hercules himself (maybe I am exaggerating just a little bit here!) However when the design is ready and you see the client’s first impression you immediately know that not even Hercules himself could have done a better job (obviously! He’s a fictional character!)
Here in Malta, in key times of the liturgical year such as Advent and Lent, the Bishops of Malta and Gozo record a brief message for the people of the Diocese. The themes are varied, from the value of the family to the unity needed in our parishes. These messages are than viewed in local churches and even broadcasted on the national tv station. My work on this project includes the design of the package – DVD sleeve, artwork for the disc and in some cases the artwork for the disc menu.
Cana Movement is a voluntary organization that helps couples to prepare for marriage and subsequently offers different services to married couples. They offer different formation courses and counseling services t anyone who needs them. This tiny brochure describes the different services offered by the movement.
Here is a collection of posters and banners I worked on some time ago. About the only thing in common they have is that they are large prints since they were done in different times, for different clients and in different circumstances going back to when I was still a university student (that one I am quite fond of).
Pope Benedict XVI has declared June 2008 – June 2009 the year of St. Paul in celebration of the 2000th anniversary of the saint’s birth. The Church around the world celebrated this year with great activities but here in Malta it had a special meaning. Although Malta is quite a tiny island, insignificant in the eyes of many, yet this saint on his way to Rome found himself shipwrecked on this island. Here are some of the designs I made for the extensive programm of activities held during this year.
After working for several design agencies and creating a whole lot of calendars for different clients, in 2009 I got to do my first calendar the way I really wanted it to be. I was given a set of phrases that will accompany each month and I had to develop the artwork for each month. That resulted in quite a piece of design work as the 2009 Calendar for the Society of Christian Doctrine was quite a feat. The following years, Mission Fund asked me to design a calendar on a similar structure but featuring photographs from their work in the missions. Read more…
This project is quite important for me since some of the artist features in this compilation are quite close friends of mine. So you can imagine the amount of work it took me to get a packaging that really was as inspirational as the music inside. Hope I was up to the feat.
As part of the activities celebrating the life of St George Preca, founder of the Society of Christian Doctrine, a group of artists have contributed to an exhibition on the beloved saint. The exhibition was presented at the Mother House of the Society and a beautiful catalog with the best entry of each artist was given to everyone who attended. It was quite fun working on this publication not only because I am a member of the Society the Saint began but also because while wiring on it I believe the artists’ vision showed me new ways to view our beloved founder.
